Remember the frisbee you had as a child? Did you know you can actually workout with one of those? It is ture! In the Kansas City area alone there are thirteen different disc golf courses where individuals can partake in a different affordable and non-traditional workout. Disc golf is also the perfect activity to do with friends! Why not be social and have a fun workout at the same time?

 

As both the walking and throwing activity , an average weight person can  burn around 220 calories per hour, with a normal game lasting around an hour and a half. 

SALSA DANCING

 

What could be better than hanging out with friends, listening to upbeat music, while salsa dancing? While you are dancing the night away, you are actually burning a ton of calories, without even noticing it.

 

"Salsa dancing is fun because it's a social way to exercise! You get to listen to music, spend time with friends, and swing your hips all in the name of exercise!" said Emily DeVore. 

 

If you went salsa dancing one Friday evening for 3 hours, you could burn up to 1215 calories, with an average weight person burning 405 calories per hour. That is insane!

 

A Popular salsa dancing location in Kansas City is The Chesterfield, inside of AMC in the Power & Light Distrcit. Every Saturday from 9pm until 2am, people ages 18 and up pack the dance floor. Whether you are a seasoned salsa dancer or just looking to have fun, this free workout is sure to spice up your gym life.  

ICE SKATING
 

With four local ice skating rinks all within a 30 minute drive from Rockhurst University, why not let the inner child in you escape and go ice skating. Ice skating is a fun activity to do year round, but especially during the holidays. It is a perfect activity for a date night, evening out with friends or family.

 

Ice skating is a non-traditional workout that allows participants to burn up to 460 calories per hour. Crown Center Ice Terrace, located conveniently 3.5 miles from campus is a popular place to ice skate that if filled with years of tradition. Admission is $6 plus $3 if you do not have your own skates.

Our resident gym expert, Josh, designed a simple How-To, step-by-step guide for any beginner wanting to start lifting weights. A leg squat is a great lift to develop leg muscle and get your feet wet in the weight room.
